Good Evening,

I have passed the Prince2 Practitioner exam and am currently looking for a way forward to progress in a career in Project Management.

I currently don't work in a PM environment but am looking to apply for jobs in a Project Support/Administrator role to get my foot in the door to the industry. Hopefully then working up the ranks to a PM!

I was wondering what there is I can do in addition to Prince2 to further my knowledge and my desirability to potential employers? I was thinking something along the lines of Risk Management or Quality Management, would this be the right path to take? What certifications/qualifications would be recommended? Is CIRM (Certificate in Risk Management) worthwhile?

Also what project management software is commonly used in the PM environment? I was thinking Microsoft Project but are there any others that I could gain knowledge in that would allow me to develop an edge over other applicants when applying for jobs?

Many Thanks for your time,

Congratulations on passing your Prince2 Practitioner.

Unfortunately, I don't think there's a simple solution to your issue. The first thing you have to consider is the area of industry you wish to go into - for example, in the banking sector, risk management would be more desirable, whereas in the construction industry, better planning skills may be more desirable.

Regarding software, obviously MS Project fits the bill for most companies. If you wanted to specialise, then something like Primavera P6 and associated products would be worthwhile.

If you're open to it, I would suggest you enter the interim market, giving yourself the opportunity to experience different roles, different organisations and industry sectors before you make a decision.

Also, there's nothing quite like experience.

Hope this helps.
